Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need a referral from my doctor?
You do not need a referral from your doctor to visit a chiropractor. In some cases we will liaise with your GP (with your permission) to let them know you are receiving chiropractic treatment and if necessary, to refer you back for further investigations if needed.
How long is a treatment?
Your initial consultation and examination will take around 1 hour, the second visit called the Report of Findings (ROF) lasts about 30 minutes. All subsequent treatments are 20 minutes long.
Is it safe for people of all ages?
Yes, chiropractic care is suitable for all ages from the young through to the elderly.
Will I need to get undressed?
For your first visit you will be required to undress down to your underwear due to the neurological and orthopedic tests. Gowns are supplied. If you are uncomfortable with this then you may wear shorts and a loose top.
Will it hurt?
Manipulation, when carried out by a qualified chiropractor is not generally painful. However, some patients may experience some soreness in the first 24 hours. The chiropractor will give advice so as to minimize any adverse reactions.
Is it safe?
Chiropractic treatment is very safe. Prior to any treatment we will take a full medical history from you to ensure that there are no reasons why you should not receive treatment. If your chiropractor suspects a problem, which requires further investigation, we will refer you to your GP before giving you any treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
There are many factors which determine the number of treatments you will need. The chiropractor will discuss this at the Report of Findings(ROF). It will incorporate the following:
• Your age and general level of fitness
• The nature of your problem
• How long you have had the problem
• any underlying conditions eg diabetes
Will I Be Treated on the First Visit?
It is the policy not to treat on your first visit as after the examination it is important to review the findings and any tests (if taken) to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made and the best treatment plan is prepared.
Will the Chiropractor Click my Neck?
Chiropractors have many different adjusting techniques that can be used to restore movement to your joints. Some include ‘adjusting’ or ‘clicking’ the neck. Some people enjoy the feeling of the adjustment while others are less keen. Your chiropractor will work with your preferences when deciding on the techniques to be used in your treatment plan.
Will I need an X-Ray or MRI?
This depends on your presenting problem, examination results and medical history. All Chiropractors and Medical Professionals abide by the Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations (IRMER) when making clinical decisions on whether to X-ray patients.

I will miss having Ruth as my chiropractor and envy her future clients

Ice, Ice, Baby*

I have been a client of Ruth's for around two years and I speak as someone who has over 15 years' experience of chiropractors and osteopaths, having had problems with my spine since quite a young age, due to the effects of a car accident, exacerbated by reaching middle age.

I love her holistic approach to chiropractic, underpinned by her nursing background. Read more...

I first met Ruth a few years ago suffering from acute sciatic pain in my lower back and right leg almost down to the ankle.

I have benefited greatly from Ruth’s care and have no hesitation in recommending her to others.

I first started seeing Ruth after breaking my ankle badly and spending weeks on crutches which left me with pain in my back, neck and shoulders. Ruth was able to identify the cause of the problems, provide effective treatment and give information about action I could take at home to help.  Read more...

I never would have made it without Ruth’s amazing skill as a chiropractor and her personal skills.

Ruth Choma is a life saver as far as I am concerned. I had never been a believer in complementary medicine but after 18 months of visiting my GP and physiotherapists for a very painful and incapacitating back problem, clinically diagnosed in lay terms as a slipped disc, I went to see Ruth out of desperation.
